Mardi Gras is actually a 6 week celebration with more than 50 “social clubs” that hold parades and then elaborate balls. Everything leads up to ‘Fat Tuesday’ and you will be there to experience it with your ship acting like your hotel in the heart of it all. You enjoy reserved seats on Fat Tuesday for 5 Mardi Gras Parades. Highlights are:
KREWE OF ZULU
The Zulu parade is an iconic, African-American krewe parade that kicks off Mardi Gras Day in New Orleans with its signature hand-painted coconut throws and distinctive costumes, which historically and satirically drew from stereotypes of the time to assert participation in a segregated civic culture. The Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club hosts the parade, which features elaborate floats, marching bands, and characters like the “Big Shot” and “Witch Doctor”.
KREWE OF REX
The Rex Mardi Gras parade is a historic and elaborate procession led by the “King of Carnival” and characterized by its themed, hand-painted floats that are built year-round and displayed for only a few hours on Fat Tuesday. The parade features 28 floats, including seven iconic, unchanging floats like the Boeuf Gras and the King’s float, and 20 new theme floats that illustrate a story or concept from history, art, or mythology. Rex is known for establishing Mardi Gras colors, anthem, and throws like the doubloon, the Rex parade serves as the centerpiece of the Mardi Gras Carnival.
KREWE OF ELKS ORLEANS
This Krewe puts on the oldest and largest of the famous “truck float parades”. This type of Mardi Gras parade is much larger and community lead and floats are community built. More than 100 Mardi Gras trucks will be featured.
KREWE OF CRESCENT CITY
The Krewe of Crescent City is the last truck parade in the New Orleans Mardi Gras season, featuring 75 trucks, each with its own theme, and thousands of riders throwing beads and other throws to the crowd. Founded in 1947, is known for signaling the end of the Carnival season.
MARDI GRAS INDIANS
Mardi Gras Indians are large collection of African-American groups in New Orleans who create elaborately beaded, feathered, and sewn costumes to parade in the streets, honoring their intertwined history with Native American and African cultures. Their parade is a secret, neighborhood-based processions, separate from the main city parades, and feature ritualistic comparisons of their handmade suits when tribes meet. (NOTE: While the Travel Club will not have seats for this secret event we will reveal it’s time and location early in the morning of Fat Tuesday.

PROGRESO, UXMAL PYRAMIDS & MERIDA – 2 DAY SHORE EXCURSION (8 am – 4 pm ship is in port)
Progreso is on the northside of the Yucatan Peninsula and features the longest cruise ship pier in the Western Hemisphere. The beaches are amazing and day trip shore excursions are available to Colonial Merida. You may want to participate in the TRAVEL CLUB exclusive two-day shore excursion to explore the mystery of the Mayan civilization. The two day overnight land shore excursion is escorted, includes all transportation, tour at UNESCO World Heritage Uxmal, first-class hotel accommodation in Merida, travel across the Yucatan Peninsula & jungle, tour at UNESCO World Heritage Chichen Itza and ferry from the mainland to your ship in Cozumel.ย
Your escort will tell you the tales of the most powerful ancient civilization in the Western Hemisphere dominating the Yucatan, Mexico, Central America and into northern South America. Far larger and more powerful than Peru’s Machu Picchu, or the Indian tribes in the North American west… the Mayans were world leaders in building, astronomy and medicine. Your first visit will be the Mayan city of Uxmal. Build in 600 A.D. Uxmal is one of the oldest UNESCO World Heritage sites because of its historic significance. At Uxmal, you see the Pyramid of the Magician, the impressive Governor’s Palace, and the Nunnery Quadrangle, all showcasing exquisite Puuc-style architecture with intricate stone carvings. The site features pyramids, plazas, and a ball court, all set within an ancient Mayan city that was a center of power in the Yucatรกn Peninsula. The Pyramid is 115 feet tall. A second pyramid is 100 feet. The huge archeological site is more than 150 acres and features more than 100 structures. Your tour here will be a once in a lifetime experience. Next you travel to the Colonial gem of Merida. Mรฉrida, the vibrant capital of the Mexican state of Yucatรกn, has a rich Mayan and colonial heritage. The cityโs focal point is Plaza de la Independencia square, bordered by the fortresslike Mรฉrida Cathedral and white limestone Iglesia de la Tercera Orden, both colonial-era churches built using relics from ancient Mayan temples. The Casa de Montejo, a 16th-century mansion, is a landmark of colonial plateresque architecture. You will love the colorful homes and quaint streets in the historic district. You will check into your choice of first class (3 star) deluxe (4 star) or luxury (5 star) hotel. Tonight you enjoy a wonderful experience in this beautiful city.
MAYAN JUNGLES, CHICHEN ITZA, PLAYA DEL CARMEN FERRY, COZUMEL, BOARD SHIP (8 AM to 4 PM Ship Is In Port)
You have another amazing day to explore the Mayan Pyramids. This morning you head deep into the Yucatan jungles and head East across the peninsula. Your highlight will be one of the world’s great archeological sites of Chichen Itza. Built in 900 A.D. it covers a huge 740 acres. This UNESCO World Heritage site is where you see a magnificent collection of Mayan architectural marvels, including the iconic, stepped pyramid of El Castillo (Kukulcan), the vast Great Ball Court, the Temple of Warriors, a platform of skulls, and the deep Cenote Sagrado (Sacred Sinkhole). These stone structures, set within a jungle environment, showcase the advanced knowledge of Maya astronomy and were part of a thriving religious, political, and commercial center that was once home to 35,000 people.ย
Two incredible highlights include The Pyramid of Kukulcan. This is the most famous symbol of the ancient history in the Western Hemisphere. It is an astronomical design with 365 steps (to reflect the rotation of the earth around the sun of a solar year. During the equinoxes, sunlight creates a shadow resembling a serpent descending the pyramid steps. Other Key Structures include the Great Ball Court, the largest in Mesoamerica, known for the ancient ball games played here, where winners were sometimes sacrificed. You also see the Platform of Skulls, a chilling platform showcasing skulls from sacrifices. Another highlight is The Caracol (Observatory) featuring an ancient astronomical observatory with windows aligned to celestial events like the equinox and Venus. Next we head to the Caribbean and the historic city of Playa del Carmen. You will board the high speed ferry here to travel to Cozumel. Upon arrival you reboard your awaiting ship with memories of one of the great travel experience of your life.
